Shevchenko played eight matches for the Ukraine U18 soccer team between 1994-95. 1995 marked his international debut. Then, he was part of the Ukrainian national soccer team and played in 111 matches, scoring 48 goals.
Shevchenko voted in support of the Social Democratic Party of Ukraine during the late 1990s. During the 2004 Ukrainian presidential election, he appeared on the campaign trail in support of Viktor Yanukovych.
He was a star during Ukraine’s 2006 FIFA World Cup campaign and the EEFA Euro 2012 campaign. Shevchenko resigned from international football after Ukraine was eliminated from the latter tournament.
He became a member of the Ukraine Social Democratic Party after his retirement. He was the second candidate of the party for the Ukrainian parliamentary elections. Unfortunately, his party was not able to win the parliamentary representation.
Shevchenko was appointed assistant manager of the Ukrainian national soccer team by manager Mykhaylo Fonenko in 2016. In 2016, Shevchenko was appointed assistant manager of the Ukrainian national team under Mykhaylo Fomenko. This was after Fomenko was fired due to Ukraine’s early withdrawal from Euro 2016.
