Early Life
Richard “Richie” Hawtin was born in Banbury, Oxfordshire on the 4th of June 1970.
His father was a robotics technician at General Motors. He loved electronic music and introduced his son to Kraftwerk early on.
Hawtin went to Sandwich Secondary High School in LaSalle. At 17, he began DJing in Detroit clubs. He used a mix of techno and house music.
Career
Hawtin and John Acquaviva created the Plus 8 record company in 1990. They named it after the pitch adjusts function of their turntable. Hawtin founded M-nus Records a few years later.
Hawtin’s 1996 12-inch singles were titled ‘Concept 1’. This was alongside the work of Robert Hood.
In 2001, he performed at Life Fest in Windsor. He lived in New York City for part of 2002 and 2003 before opening a label there in Berlin, Germany. There he developed the careers of many DJ producers like Magda, Gaiser, and Heartthrob.
Hawtin received an honorary doctorate in music technology from the University of Huddersfield in July 2015. In 2016, Hawtin founded his own music technology company called PLAYdifferently. The MODEL 1 mixer was Hawtin’s first release. It was co-designed by Andy Rigby Jones, an award-winning designer.
